The stucco edge

  • Who knew that wadded up phonebooks would be up to code for building a roof?
  • Besides the wadded up phonebooks, there's also the weird gooey plastic.
  • Wad 'em up good boys, we're roofers now!
  • And there was the black goo. And the hole in the boards. And the nails through the plastic.
  • More of the phone books. Wonder how many of the numbers are still valid?
  • Water damage, all the way up.

  • Shiny new plywood, gunky old beams (at least usable beams
  • The concrete box that held up the chimney, which we could move with a big prybar - i.e. not actually in the ground, just sitting on top of it. And of course it was sliding down the hill, taking the chimney with it, leading to a ton of cracks that allowed enough water so that the wood was wet & crumbled as you touched it.
  • Yeah, you could put your hand under the "foundation" of the chimney.
  • The effectively floating chimney base - it's just resting on the dirt, and you can see how much it's separated from the house foundation. (In the background is the chimney pipe)
  • When is a foundation not a foundation? When it's not attached to anything at all - that's the gap between the real house foundation on top and the chimney "foundation" on the bottom of the picture.
  • Moldy, wet, falling apart - the box around the chimney. Kind of amazing that the chimney handn't fallen down.
  • The support box for the chimney, built around the joists - the box is all wet and rotted.
