Aaron modeling a hat that the men of Taquile wear - if the hat is half white half red, then the man is single - if it's all red, then they are married. The hats are hand woven, and the boys have to present their new all-red hat to the parents of their potential bride - supposedly the father will pour water into the hat to see how well it holds the water.<br /> <br /> It's a good story, I'm just not sure if it holds water.

It's a good story, I'm just not sure if it holds water.

  • We paid the very small amount (something like 5 soles, or a buck fifty) to ride on their reed boat over to a different island.
  • The reed boat had a platform that we hung out on - impressive that it was all hand built (at least that's what they said…)
  • With our island hosts and boat drivers - unfortunately I can't remember their names.
  • Our hotel way off in the distance, below the mountains outside Puno
  • More waves on Lake Titacaca
  • When we pulled up to the island of Taquile, they had a novel docking method - everyone tie onto the previous boat! Would have been fun to watch the one in the middle leave, but we had stairs to climb!
  • Welcoming statues on the path up to the main square on Taquile
  • Look! Stairs!!! And now we're at an even higher elevation - over 12,000 feet! (This is the path from the dock to the main town in Taquile)
  • Not at all creepy.
  • There was a small festival on the island - aparently there are a lot of these, but it was nice and chill - some music, lots of flags, lots of color garb (which is part of their culture and heritage)
