Peru 2012

Kay and I spent two weeks in Peru with Aaron and Yupeng - here are the highlights of the trip! Also, Carl hooked me up with a Lytro to borrow, the pictures are here: https://pictures.lytro.com/kerry/stories/42258.

A view from the other side of the main plaza (which we weren't allowed to walk in)

  • Yeah, there were a lot of stairs on our trip to Peru.
  • It's as cool at Machu Picchu as everyone says it is. And that was before we climbed Wayna Picchu (the peak right in the background)
  • A shot down one of the corridors - the buildings on the left would have had thatched roofs on them during the Incan times.
  • More Machu Picchu...
  • Honestly, no idea why we're blocking the path with Kay's walking stick.
  • The Incans used the natural rock formations whenever possible - that big slab of rock is natural, obviously all of the bricks are Incan construction
  • "Can you hear me now?" If you put your head in the nooks and whispered or made a low humming, it would reflect off of the opposite wall, like the "hear across the museum!" type things they have at museums
  • Kay's trying to get out of the sun… (No, messing with the cool noise reflections…)
  • Looking back at Machu Picchu from the other side - the rough untouched looking area was the quarry, and the main remaining land on which they could have built.
  • A view from the other side of the main plaza (which we weren't allowed to walk in)
  • Did we mention that there are a lot of stairs?
  • Another view of Machu Picchu
  • ….and some stairs. If you tripped on some of these, you would be in a baaaad place.
  • The Chinchillas were HUGE. Think Pele-sized.
  • And of course there are Llamas grazing.
  • The Intihuatana stone, which held the sun in place on it's path through the sky (or so says Wikipedia)
  • Wayna Picchu in the setting sun - we're still trying to figure out how the heck we're going to climb that thing.
  • On our way to climb Wayna Picchu, we of course stopped to try to squeeze it.
  • The guard house on the way to Wayna Picchu - you signed in on the way with with your name, country, and time.
  • All ready to cimb up Wayna PIcchu. It's early (around 8 am), and we're ready to kick some hill butt.
